The short answers

Talent mapping, answered in a paragraph

The six questions we are asked most often, answered directly. Each answer links to the articles that go deeper and to the service page on this site.

Definition

Talent mapping is the structured research process of identifying and profiling the people who could fill a defined set of roles in a defined market, before a vacancy exists. A talent map records who those people are, which organisations employ them, their function, seniority, location and tenure, and how the teams around them are structured — so hiring and workforce decisions are made against researched evidence rather than against whoever happens to apply.

01

How does talent mapping work?

A project starts with the business question, then agrees the market boundary — roles, industries, locations. Researchers identify the target organisations, profile the relevant people from public sources and open primary research, verify and normalise every record so titles are comparable, analyse the landscape and deliver a structured map with written findings and a briefing.

02

How much does talent mapping cost?

Cost is driven by scope: the size of the market, the number of target organisations and locations, the depth of research and the deliverables. Audentia Research charges a fixed project fee, agreed in the proposal before work starts — no commission and no percentage of salary, however many hires come from the map.

03

Talent mapping vs recruitment — what is the difference?

Recruitment responds to an open vacancy and ends when it is filled. Talent mapping starts from a business question, covers the whole defined market whether or not people are available today, and produces a research asset that keeps its value long after the first hire.

04

Talent mapping vs talent sourcing?

Sourcing looks for people to approach for a specific live role and stops when the pipeline is full. Mapping describes the entire relevant population and the competitor structures around it, so it can inform strategy, workforce planning and many future hires, not just one.

05

What is competitor talent mapping?

Structured research into how rival organisations are staffed — leadership, team structures, headcount distribution, talent concentrations and hiring activity. It uses publicly available information and open primary research only, never confidential internal information, and it explains why a talent market behaves the way it does.

06

What is talent intelligence?

The gathering, verification and analysis of data about a talent market — people, competitors, skills, rewards and locations — turned into insight a leadership team can act on. Unlike a one-off map, it is designed to stay current and be refreshed on an agreed cadence.

Frequently asked questions

What is talent mapping?
Talent mapping is the structured research process of identifying and profiling the people who could fill a defined set of roles in a defined market, before a vacancy exists. A talent map records who those people are, where they work, their function, seniority, location and tenure, and how the organisations around them are structured — so hiring and workforce decisions are made on evidence rather than on whoever applies.
How does talent mapping work?
A project starts with the business question, agrees the market boundary (roles, industries, locations), identifies the target organisations, researches and profiles the relevant people from publicly available sources and open primary research, verifies and normalises every record, analyses the landscape, and delivers a structured map with written findings and a briefing.
How much does talent mapping cost?
Audentia Research prices every talent mapping project as a fixed fee based on scope: the size of the market, the number of target organisations and locations, the depth of research and the deliverables agreed. There is no commission and no percentage of salary, and the fee is set out in the proposal before work starts. Because scope drives the fee, a specific figure needs a short conversation about what you actually need.
How long does a talent mapping project take?
A focused talent scan can be delivered in roughly 2 to 10 days. A full talent map usually runs three to eight weeks, depending on the size of the market, the number of target organisations and locations, and the seniority of the population. Timelines are agreed in the proposal before work begins.
What is the difference between talent mapping and recruitment?
Recruitment responds to an open vacancy and ends when it is filled. Talent mapping starts from a business question, covers the whole defined market whether or not those people are available now, and produces a research asset that keeps its value long after the first hire.
What is the difference between talent mapping and talent sourcing?
Talent sourcing looks for people who could be approached for a specific live role and stops when the pipeline is full. Talent mapping describes the entire relevant population and the competitor structures around it, available or not, so it can inform strategy, planning and many future hires.
What is competitor talent mapping?
Competitor talent mapping is structured research into how rival organisations are staffed: leadership, team structures, headcount distribution, talent concentrations and hiring activity. It uses publicly available information and open primary research only, never confidential internal information.
What is executive talent mapping?
Executive talent mapping is the research and profiling of senior leadership populations — C-suite, board and VP-level leaders — to establish who could credibly perform a specific senior role and what it would take to move them. It supports succession planning and leadership hiring before any search is launched.
What is the difference between talent intelligence and workforce intelligence?
Talent intelligence focuses on the external talent market: the people, competitors, skills, rewards and locations that shape it. Workforce intelligence focuses on how workforces — your own and your competitors’ — are composed, structured, distributed and skilled. Both turn research into decisions and are often commissioned together.
Does Audentia Research map talent in both the UK and the USA?
Yes. Audentia Research has offices in London and Mumbai and has researched talent markets since 2012. UK projects account for regional talent clusters and notice periods; US projects are researched metro by metro and account for equity and compensation structures. See UK talent mapping and US talent mapping.
How do I choose a talent mapping company?
Look for a provider that is paid for the research rather than for placements, sets a fixed fee before work starts, uses only public sources and open primary research, verifies and normalises job titles, hands over all data for you to keep, and can explain what the findings mean for your decision.
Who owns the data from a talent mapping project?
With Audentia Research, you own 100% of it. Every record, benchmark and insight is handed over and stays with you permanently, and you can make additional hires from the map at no extra cost.
Where does Audentia Research publish its talent mapping articles?
On this site and on Medium, Substack, Blogspot, Quora and Tumblr. Audentia Research also has a company profile on Clutch. This page links to every published article, grouped by topic — see Where to find Audentia Research.
Is Audentia Research a registered company?
